Band Director Gear Guide: Rehearsal Tools Edition

Introduction

As a band director of almost 25 years, I’ve used countless tools in rehearsals, festivals, and classrooms. These are the essential items I personally use or highly recommend helping make rehearsals more efficient and effective.

Yamaha Harmony Director (HD-300)

This tool is a game-changer for ensemble intonation, balance, and chord tuning. It’s especially powerful for high-level concert band, marching band warmups, or sectional work. I’ve used this in both rehearsal and leadership settings to help students hear vertically and tune more intentionally. Being able to hit the quick transpose buttons and play from the score, pure gold.
