Original Concert Band/Wind Ensemble Compositions

Under a Snow Blanket - LISTEN

This musical work is ethereal in nature, simple in structure, and quickly and easily accessible to most concert bands. This work would be a spectacular addition to any winter concert. Waking up during a winter morning, and all is peaceful, quiet and still. You look outside for the first time and discover a change that occurred while you slept. Everywhere you look is now covered under a peaceful, and yet undisturbed blanket of snow.

Battle of Leyte Gulf - LISTEN

The Battle of Leyte Gulf is considered to have been the largest naval battle of World War II and was one of the largest naval battles in history. In 1944, from October 23rd to October 26th, over 200,000 naval personnel from America, Australia, and the Imperial Japanese Navy waged war in the waters near the Philippine islands of Leyte, Samar and Luzon. Some have considered this battle to be an end of an era of modern naval warfare, and the one of, if not the last naval battles between battleships in history. This composition for wind ensemble begins with an aural representation of the various engagements, while the ending is written in tribute of all of the losses suffered, and of the enduring spirit that remains after the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Fantasy - LISTEN

This new composition is a fusion for the concert band setting, combining modern electronic instruments, traditional middle eastern percussion, and the standard wind ensemble instruments. This work combines Western harmonies and voicing with traditional Middle Eastern melodies, rhythms and grooves. There is also a feature for your oboe, or the optional soprano saxophone.

Into the Blue - LISTEN

An exciting 6/8 concert march for medium-easy concert/symphonic bands. PROGRAM NOTES: INTO THE BLUE Into the Blue is inspired by the brave men and women that fly the USAF Thunderbirds. This work is a tribute to their abilities, precision, and absolute brilliance. This work is playful, and joyful in nature, and it is written to emulate the experience of seeing the Thunderbirds for the first time, through the eyes of a child. -WWWIV

Counter Productive - LISTEN

Program Notes: Many of us have a habit of doing things that are counterproductive to what we should be achieving, and this was very much the case and basis for the creation of this composition. This work highlights creating motifs then counter motifs, creating melodies and then counter melodies, harmonies, and then counter harmonies, and also by utilizing rhythms and then counter rhythms. The middle section of this work includes a complex multi-meter passage to emphasize a feeling of anxiety, or tension that some feel while being counterproductive. This work does build to a dramatic and satisfying conclusion, and as you will hear sometimes being counterproductive, can be productive.

The Storm - LISTEN

THE STORM I. The Anticipation II. The Arrival III. The Aftermath This work can represent to the listener either the literal or the figurative interpretation of a storm. The Storm is a three movement continuous work, with no breaks between each movement. This is intentional as during a storm, there may be a lull, and time may feel as if it slows down, but it never stops moving. The first movement is presented as the anticipation, when you know that The Storm is coming, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. The second movement, faster pace and more intense, is the actual storm, and the resolve to survive through the moment. The final movement represents rebuilding and reflection. The last moments of this work are a tribute to the memories that will always remain of the event, but acknowledges the hopeful and uncertain future that awaits.

Jazz Band Compositions

That's Enough Slices - LISTEN

This is an original composition for Jazz Ensemble in the jazz/rock/funk genre. Program Notes: My wife has been a Color Guard instructor for more than two decades and now oversees the Dance Team and Cheerleaders. Over the years, whenever I arranged a piece that didn’t follow the standard 8, 16, or 32-count phrasing, she would give me “the look” and calls them re-counts. So, I decided to lean into it and compose an entire piece that intentionally avoids those predictable phrase lengths. If anyone ever attempts to choreograph this, it will certainly keep them on their toes! And, much like the viral video where a pizza keeps getting sliced smaller and smaller, I can almost hear the choreographer exclaiming, “That’s enough slices!”
